Nicholas came to our Meriden Portrait Photography studio to celebrate his first birthday with a smash cake photography session with CT Smash Cake Photographer. These sessions are one of my favorites to shoot. They are the one session where my creativity can really shine. Typically it’s the first time a baby has tried cake & it can go either way. Some babies are totally intrigued, may or may not eat the cake, but totally demolish the cake. On the flip side, other babies are not a fan of the texture & happiness is short lived. Nicholas was definitely that baby that loved his cake & playing with it. He was so happy & fun. There was barely a resemblance of a cake left when he was done.
Before the shoot, Nicholas’ mom picked a Monster’s Inc Themed smash cake session. With every smash cake session, I strive to customize the theme for each and every client. We collaborated together on ideas for the session. Mom really liked one of my recent sessions with the same theme suggesting we do the same, but I like trying new different ideas each time. Between mom’s ideas and my ideas, I came up with making a banner that resembles Sully & Mike. I just love how the cake from You’ve Been Cupcaked in Wallingford, matches the banner I made so perfectly. It really helped the set flow nicely.
During the shoot, Nicholas was definitely on the move. We had to keep coming up with different ways to redirect his attention back to the beautiful set we created. We started with some more formal photos without the cake. He loved to stand, but couldn’t do it without assistance, so we gave him a chair to hold on to. Then we worked quick while he sat singing songs & making any funny noises we could. The fun finally came when the cake came out! At first he wasn’t took sure of the cake, but once he got a lick it was all done from there. I typically schedule smash cake sessions for 1 hour, but Nicholas tore into the cake so fast we were done in 20 minutes!
Once we were done with the session, I knew that we had some amazing photos of Nicholas and couldn’t wait to edit them. I loaded them on the computer and got to work. I invited mom & dad back to the studio for their ordering session where I showed them all the photos as Nicholas played around the room. Everyone was smiling, oh-ing & ah-ing at the cuteness that was before them. I just love being able to watch my clients see their photos for the first time. Some cry, some laugh, but it’s always big smiles. Mom ordered a large print & frame from Organic Bloom. These are such a fun product for a smash cake session. They are handmade & come in lots of shapes & colors.
