{Feature Friday} What To Wear to your Maternity Session | CT Maternity Photographer

One of the most frequently asked questions I get after I book a maternity session is “What do I wear?”. Naturally you may be feeling uneasy or insecure about being photographed at 7-8 months and want to be sure to look your absolute best. First and foremost, whatever you choose to wear you, be sure that YOU feel comfortable  & beautiful in.  Below are a few tips to make the task easier for your on location Maternity session.

Can’t go wrong with a Maxi Dress. For one they are super comfortable. Who doesn’t like to be fashionable & comfortable at the same time.  It is also incredibly flattering making it a perfect fit for the pregnant body. A maxi dress can cover up parts of the body that you are feeling insecure about, but pulled close to show that adorable baby bump. It can also add a dramatic effect to a still photo blowing in the wind. You just cannot go wrong with a maxi dress.

A tight fit. If you feel comfortable wearing a tight dress I totally recommend rocking that at your maternity session. A tight bodycon dress on a pregnant body can show off those curves and baby bump.

Solids are best. Patterns in Moderation. Patterns can be distracting & since we want the focus to be on that baby bump solids will bring that focus to the belly. Solids are also very timeless. If you really want some patterns, I would suggest bringing it in with accessories, scarves, chunky necklaces, etc, or with your spouse’s outfit. Lace can be a beautiful way to add pattern without taking away from your belly too much.

Coordinate, don’t match. When planning outfits for your spouse & family, choose outfits that coordinate, but not matching. Choose colors that are complimentary for everyone’s outfits.

Consider your shoes. On location especially your feet will be in a lot of the photos. Avoid sneakers for men. If you want to wear heels I highly recommend bringing a part of sensible footwear for walking & we can change into them when we get to our location. If we are on the beach, bare feet are perfectly fine.

Pamper yourself. I highly recommend professional makeup and hair. You will feel beautiful and confident at your session.  A manicure is also recommended, since you will be posing so much using your hands to help belly stand out, nails will be very visible in some shots.

I have a collection of maternity gowns available at my studio, but if you want to find the perfect outfit here are a few recommended stores:
