Newborn Photography FAQ | Connecticut Newborn Photographer

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most special moments in life, and capturing those early days with professional newborn portraits is something families treasure forever. Below are answers to the most common questions parents ask when planning their newborn photography session with Elizabeth Frederick Photography.

When should I book my newborn photography session?

The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or early third trimester. Newborn photographers often schedule a limited number of sessions each month to ensure a relaxed and personalized experience for every family.

When you book, we simply place your due date on the calendar as a placeholder. Once your baby arrives, we schedule the exact session date.

Booking early helps guarantee availability around your baby’s arrival.

What age is best for newborn photos?

Newborn sessions are best photographed when babies are 10–21 days old.

During this stage, babies are typically very sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses. This allows us to safely capture those beautiful, cozy images that newborn photography is known for.

After this window, babies often become more alert and less likely to stay in curled poses for long periods of time.

What if my baby arrives early or late?

Don’t worry — this is very common!

Because we schedule using your due date, we leave flexibility in the calendar for when babies arrive earlier or later than expected. Once your baby is born, simply send a message and we will schedule your session within the ideal newborn timeframe.

Can parents and siblings be included in the session?

Absolutely! Family portraits are such an important part of newborn sessions.

All newborn packages at Elizabeth Frederick Photography include a family portion of the session, which allows us to capture beautiful images of parents and siblings with the newest member of the family.

These images often become some of the most cherished portraits.

What should my baby wear for the session?

The studio provides a curated collection of wraps, outfits, headbands, bonnets, and props for newborn sessions. Everything is carefully selected to complement a soft, light, and timeless style.

Most newborn portraits are created with babies wrapped or in simple outfits so the focus stays on their tiny details.

Parents and siblings are encouraged to wear neutral, soft colors for a cohesive and timeless look.

How long does a newborn session take?

Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours, but scheduled for 4 hours.

This allows plenty of time for:

  • Feeding
  • Diaper changes
  • Soothing
  • Gentle posing

Sessions are completely baby-led and relaxed, ensuring your baby stays comfortable throughout the entire experience.

Where does the session take place?

Newborn sessions take place at my Connecticut photography studio, which is designed specifically for newborn photography. The studio is kept warm and comfortable so babies remain sleepy and relaxed.

Everything needed for the session is provided, so parents can simply arrive and enjoy the experience.

When will we receive our photos?

After your session, your images will be carefully edited and presented in a private online gallery where you can select your favorites based on the package you chose.

Turnaround time is typically 2–3 weeks.

Do you offer milestone sessions or first year photography packages?

Yes! Many families love documenting their baby’s first year as they grow and change so quickly.

In addition to newborn sessions, Elizabeth Frederick Photography offers milestone and cake smash sessions to capture important stages such as:

  • Sitting milestones
  • First birthday portraits
  • Cake smash celebrations

Many families choose to document their baby’s first year with multiple sessions, creating a beautiful collection of memories from newborn through the first birthday.

How do I reserve my newborn photography session?

Reserving your session is simple.

Once you’re ready to book, you will receive a booking proposal with your package options and contract. A $175 non-refundable retainer is required to secure your due date on the calendar, and the remaining balance is due on the day of your session.

Because newborn sessions are limited each month, booking during pregnancy is recommended.
